Malta [ April 2018 ]

Day Four - A relaxed day wandering round beautiful Valletta - a quirky fusion that reminds me of Italy, North Africa and even Havana!

It was made even better by clear blue skies and I got very hot whilst sketching St John’s Square. A quirky architectural detail sketch followed and then the majestic St Paul’s cathedral dome that hover over the city skyline.

Fireworks tonight to round off my stay in Malta...

Day Three - Moving hotel base to Valletta today and walked around the somewhat overcast seafront from St Julian’s to Sliema. Unfortunately the ferry wasn’t operational and had to to take a bus for the final stage to this years ‘European City of Culture’. Valletta is a stunning small city - vibrant and quirkily beautiful - a rooftop skyline sketch from the hotel took advantage of the gorgeous sunny afternoon...

Day Two - After another bus ride and ferry trip, I visited the adjacent island of Gozo - a very different island to what I had expected - a series of interesting towns with spectacular churches at the heart of each and a beautiful main town, Victoria. A sketch over lunch in Independence Square followed and was added to a quick doodle drawn the previous day whilst in Mdina, of St Paul’s Cathedral...

Day One - A long weekend around Valletta, the European City of Culture 2018. After a late night flight, I woke up and had a wander around Spinoler Bay in St Julian’s. A coffee and a croissant and a sketch in the sun overlooking the bay.

A bus ride to the extraordinary fortified city of Mdina followed in the evening after an eventful bus ride!
